The 40th Annual Detroit auto show opened at 11:00pm Saturday October 12, 1940 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony by Mayor Jeffries at Convention Hall. It opened simultaneously with the New York show, in keeping with the long-standing belief of many Detroiters that the national show should belong to Detroit.
