1956 Downtown Detroit - Campus Martius |
In this 1956 image, Detroit City Hall stands opposite the Campus Martius 1872 Michigan Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument by Randolph Rogers. At that time, the clock in the 200-foot tower was said to be the largest in the nation. Statues of Cadillac, La Salle, Marquette and Richard were designed for City Hall by Julius Melchers to recall the city's French heritage. After a bitter public debate, City Hall was razed in 1961.
