1959 Pontiac Firebird III |
The 1959 GM Firebird III experimental car was a two-passenger, gas turbine-powered car. It was the first to feature a single-stick control system which replaced the conventional steering wheel, brake pedal and accelerator. This drive-by-wire system was used in the first experiments with automated highways. In the background is the water tower at the GM Warren Technological Center. It is located on the east side of the Research Administration Building and is 140 feet high and holds an emergency water supply of about 250,000 gallons.
