Ethyl gasoline was developed in the General Motors Research Laboratories and went on sale in 1923. The following year, Ethyl Gasoline Corporation was formed by General Motors and Standard Oil Company of New Jersey to market this 'knockless' motor fuel component developed by General Motors Research Laboratories.
